Course Introduction
The Danger of a Single Story
This assignment invites you to critically engage with the complexities of historical narratives and the consequences of learning history through a singular perspective. Reflecting on the video, “The Danger of a Single Story,” you will explore how the conventional approach of teaching history as a set of names and dates oversimplifies and homogenizes historical events. The assignment highlights the importance of recognizing the diverse interpretations that historians bring to the study of history, emphasizing that history is not a monolithic account but a collection of varying perspectives and analyses.
You will examine the evolution of historical scholarship, noting how shifts in demographics and ideologies have led to more nuanced understandings of past events. By analyzing examples of historical misrepresentations and current controversies in textbook content, you will consider the implications of a singular historical narrative on societal beliefs and interactions. The goal is to enhance your skills in critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and understanding of historiography, while reflecting on your own responsibility in shaping and interpreting historical narratives.

Assessment 101
Amy Bell
In this video, the focus is on the importance of core objective assessment for maintaining accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS). Given that discussions about accreditation can sometimes feel like “herding cats,” humor was used to make the message more engaging and memorable for faculty. This video aims to demonstrate how integrating assessments into courses not only measures student learning but also serves as a valuable tool for enhancing teaching and supporting student growth—creating a win-win for everyone.
PRESHOW WELCOME
EQUITY RICHLAND
One of the most wasted pieces of educational real estate lies in the minutes prior to class and larger educational events. Participants are often bored, wondering what they should be doing as they wait for programming to begin. Our pre-show videos have taken this wasted time and turned it on its head. Chock full of music, imagery, film clips and factoids, our pre-show menageries are guaranteed to engage your audiences and set the stage, environment and mood for any event.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Equity Richland
Experiential learning can be one of the most engaging pedagogical modalities available to us. But it can also turn into a nightmare if it isn't fully explained and demonstrated in a way that is quickly and easily digested by your audience. Video walk-throughs can help immensely with this task. This video was created to help explain a virtual, geo-caching scavenger hunt game, designed to educate our participants about our current U.S. immigration system.
A Tableau Dashboard is a collection of data that has been visualized, letting you compare a variety of data simultaneously and from different vantage points. For example, if you
have data that you review every day, you can create a dashboard that displays
all of the data visually on one page, rather than navigate to separate
Excel worksheets. A well-designed dashboard can align your
organization's efforts, help uncover key insights, and
speed up decision-making.
